Academic Coaching

The Academic Coaching component began through a partnership and investment with InsideTrack®. InsideTrack® began with a program diagnostic designed to grow and develop STC’s ability to retain students through utilization of a coaching methodology, professional development and role clarity. The diagnostic included a SWOT analysis and in-depth interviews with staff, faculty, students and leadership team to gauge workflows, processes and culture. Results of the diagnostic showed that certain student support roles were not clearly defined within the organization, causing confusion to students and staff, which lead to the implementation of the InsideTrack® coaching methodology through Foundational Coach Training and Reinforcement Training.

The Foundational Coach Training includes 20 of STC's Academic Coaches and bolsters coaching skills through the infusion of a coaching model that provides consistent one-on-one intervention designed to work with at-risk students by focusing on their strengths, study skills, goals, degree of engagement, academic planning and overall college performance. The Reinforcement Training includes 10 Academic Coaches to advance to Student Coaching Certification with two selected to a train-the-trainer model that allows for sustainability after grant expiration. These consistent but tailored coaching practices are critical to attaining STC's goals of increasing persistence and retention rates.
