Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Grant

Project Purpose

The Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Program provides grants to assist Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. These grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance academic offerings, program quality and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students and helping large number of Hispanic students and other low-income individuals complete postsecondary degrees.

Project Details

Funded through the Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Title V Program, South Texas College was awarded a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant has a five-year performance period that began October 1, 2020 and will extend through September 30, 2025. The grant’s narrative was structured and guided by DOE requirements and goals from the 2019-2025 STC Strategic Plan. Both were aligned into what became the South Texas College DHSI Grant Project.

The STC DHSI grant has four components: Academic Coaching, Online Tutoring, Starfish and Financial Literacy. Different in functions and purpose, each component is at the core of student support services and designed to promote persistence and academic achievement, and provide uniform and consistent services to student pathways. The grant components were designed with specific goals and quantifiable objectives; however, through implementation, they have evolved into a symbiotic relationship whereby functions are benefiting the other in their individual success.
