Learn more about human sexuality issues at STC’s Mid-Valley Campus
Although the topic of human sexuality is often viewed as taboo, the changing attitudes about sexual practices and beliefs reveal a great deal about societal norms and human behavior. Scholars from all walks of life have studied the phenomenon, and on March 27, South Texas College is hosting a Human Sexuality Conference at its Mid-Valley Campus to educate others about the history of sexual behavior and the role it plays in society.
The day-long event, which is co-sponsored by the Mid-Valley Psychology Club and faculty members in the college’s Psychology Department, features discussions by STC instructors in a variety of disciplines who are experts in the field of human sexuality. The conference begins at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public.
The day’s activities include:
- STC Sociology Instructor Nihan Kayaardi-Hinojosa presents “Sexual Practices in the Middle East” from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in room G-191.
- Art Instructor Phyllis Evans presents “Surrealism and the Black Dahlia Murder” from noon to 1:45 p.m. in room G-191.
- Dr. Blake Armstrong, STC associate professor of psychology presents “History of Sexual Practices and Beliefs” from 2 to 3:45 p.m. in room G-191.
- STC Assistant Professor of Psychology Jennifer Fox discusses sexual deviations from 4 to 5:45 p.m. in room G-169.
“Sexual behavior impacts all aspects of human life and there have been many humanistic and scientific studies done on the topic,” said Dr. Blake Armstrong. “Unfortunately the topic carries a social stigma, and we want to create a new awareness in our community about the issue with this educational event.”
STC’s Mid-Valley Campus is located at 400 North Border in Weslaco. For more information about these activities contact Armstrong at 956-447-6658.
