Advancements in technology means more opportunities for one STC student
Technology is constantly changing, and advancements in the field continue to enhance industries, lives and capabilities by leaps and bounds. As soon as one technological breakthrough is established, another better innovation comes along. And computer and information technology professionals must keep up with the latest and greatest advancements to make sure their businesses remain competitive in a global market.
South Texas College student Benjamin Velez is up for the challenge and that is why he is preparing himself for a career in computer and information technologies. Velez, who is pursuing STC’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Computer and Information Technologies (CIT) Degree, enjoys learning and implementing new technologies and innovations, and he hopes to put this fervor to use once he gets out of college.
“As technology continues to develop and change, the CIT field is rapidly expanding,” he said. “The classes I’ve taken at the college reflect this, and I’ve been able to learn so much about software, programming, business theory and practice, and the application of technology in the real world. I would recommend STC to anyone interested in pursuing their education. At first I didn’t want to go to college, but my parents encouraged me to apply, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
The BAT CIT Program at STC prepares students for careers as computer and information system managers, database administrators and network system analysts. Because the demand for better technological systems increases as rapidly as the development of new technologies, students in the program are provided with the skills necessary to be able to adapt to the ever changing industry.
Velez, who graduated from McAllen High School, enjoyed the classes at STC so much so that he decided to apply for a job as a Computer Network Technician at the college. He was elated when he got the job, and working at the college has provided him with extensive experience in dealing with all facets of an organization – from technology to people.
“STC has given me a foundation for my success, and I can’t say enough about the supportive learning environment at the college,” he said. “I have grown so much as a person here, and I look forward to what the future holds. My biggest dream is to start a technology-based company to help make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that if someone works hard enough to achieve their dream, that anything is possible.”
In your opinion, what is the most pressing issue in business and technology today? In my opinion the biggest issue is the economy and the problems that exist in the world market. I believe that we can use technological advancements to create biofuels and alternative energy solutions to help alleviate this situation and create more jobs. Technology has moved so fast in the past 10 years, and even though we have come to rely on it in our everyday lives, I don’t think we realize how lucky we are to have these things that make life so much easier for all of us. I believe that we have to stop and take inventory of all the incredible advancements we have seen in our lifetimes, and build upon them to create a better tomorrow for our country.
What is the best piece of advice that they ever gave you? College is a fun adventure and learning new tricks and meeting new people is always fun no matter how old you are. I was also told to never give up and take it one day at a time, to continue with I am doing, and to see it to the finish line. Half of the battle is just getting up and doing something, and taking the first step in the direction of your goals. Once you start you don’t want to stop.
