Call for participation: “Sell Your Fear” Poster Contest and Interdisciplinary Conference
The South Texas College Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery and The University of Texas-Pan American are hosting “Sell Your Fear,” a conference dealing with the selling of fear in contemporary America. These groups are currently accepting research submissions for the conference and art for the poster competition. The goal of the multi-disciplinary event is to broaden awareness of the ways in which fear is used as a marketing strategy in society.
“By encouraging the expression and self-awareness of our own fears, and the ways in which they are manipulated throughout commerce and culture, we hope to analyze and deconstruct the campaign of fear in order to redirect our efforts as we replace fear with hope,” said STC Art Instructor David Freeman, who is one of the conference coordinators. “While the conference is aimed primarily at graphic designers, we also hope to receive entries from those in the fields of art, economics, philosophy, women’s studies and psychology.”
The poster exhibit will be on display at STC’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery from March 26 through April 30, and the conference will take place at The University of Texas-Pan American on March 28 and 29, 2009.
The submission deadline for research proposals is Jan. 31. Proposals should address how the media impacts and informs culture, ethics in communication and its role in the disseminations of various agendas. Entries can be sent to Sofia K. Perez at skperez@southtexascollege.edu.
Poster entries must be 24” x 36” in size, and should include a print of artwork (on paper), completed entry form, and a signed Art Exhibit Agreement. Each accepted work must arrive by Feb. 26 with proper labeling (name and title) securely attached to the back of print, and should be sent to Sofia K. Perez at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. McAllen, Texas 78501. Shipped entries must be in reusable tubes and the shipping package must include a pre-paid, self-addressed shipping label or a filled-in shipping label with an account number for the return of the work.
The entry fee for submissions is $20, and checks should be made payable to South Texas College and sent to STC’s Cashier’s Office at P.O. Box 9701, McAllen, Texas 78502. Only checks will be accepted.
