Instructors play prominently in upcoming production of Tosca

Elaine Dispo, STC speech instructor, will show off her vocal talent playing a nun in South Texas Lyric Opera’s upcoming production of Tosca on May 20th and 22nd.
South Texas Lyric Opera, which is sponsored in part by South Texas College, is bringing Puccini’s Tosca to the stage on May 20th and 22nd at the McAllen Civic Center and three STC instructors are playing prominent roles.
Tosca is a three-act opera taking place at the turn of the 19th Century during Italy’s battle for freedom. It also involves the love story between the two main characters Tosca and Mario. This production is the biggest that South Texas Lyric Opera has presented with a grand array of talented singers composing the cast and directed by Dr. Mazias de Oliveira, STC Music Department instructor and founder and creative director of STLO.
Elaine Dispo, STC speech instructor, studies the “Bel Canto” method of singing with Dr. de Oliveira. She auditioned for Tosca and will be singing the part of a nun in the production.
“STLO members are focused on enriching the arts in the Rio Grande Valley, using our talents to educate and entertain the community,” said Dispo. “I am very exited to be part of this production and believe that it will be a triumph for the company.”
Singing the part of a jailer is STC history instructor Alfonso Uribe. He has participated in STLO productions for more than two years. He trains with Dr. de Oliveira to bring his baritone voice to its fullest potential.
“I encourage everyone to attend Tosca; it’s a very dramatic opera with lots of action, but very romantic,” said Uribe. “It will certainly appeal to everyone, even if they’re not familiar with opera.”
Opening day is set for Tuesday, May 20th at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Civic Center located at 10th Street and the Expressway.
