Congressman Ruben Hinojosa helped kick off the Emergency Responders Grant Writing Workshop held Aug. 24 at STC’s Pecan Campus. He offered a warm welcome to the more than 60 people who attended the workshop to learn about federal and local funding available to first responders for training, communications and outfitting.
As part of the event, the crowd of emergency responders, educators, administrators, fundraisers, and community organization workers found out more about the types of funding available, and how to write and obtain grants. Speakers addressed such subjects as how grants are evaluated, key actions to undertake while preparing for release of the grant notice, how to prepare for the audit and compliance checks, and resources for tracking new grant releases.
“Grants are at the core of most community development programs in South Texas,” said Congressman Hinojosa. “Hurricane Dolly reminded us of the importance of emergency responders in the wake of disaster. I would like to thank everyone in the audience for their valuable service to the community, and I hope you find this workshop helpful because together we can work to make this a more thriving region that is prepared for any disaster that may occur in the future.”
As founding chairman of STC’s Board of Trustees, Congressman Hinojosa couldn’t help but comment on the college’s success.
“I‘ve seen STC grow significantly over the last 15 years. What started as a community college with only 800 students was only the beginning. STC has now become an engine producing a well-trained workforce in South Texas and beyond, and I’m very proud to be a part of the college’s rich history.”
