College organization to honor local veterans at special event

South Texas College’s Beta Epsilon Mu Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society will host Community Day Honoring Veterans at the college’s Pecan Campus located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007 from 8:30 – 11 a.m. Admission is free.

“This event is our opportunity to salute the brave men and women who have served our country in times of war and peace throughout the years,” said Tony Ramirez, STC BEM Advisor.  “As an honors society, one of our hallmarks is service to our community and what better way to fulfill that hallmark than saluting our veterans. We will have a variety of activities including a guest speaker, live conjunto music, refreshments and a small parade.”

Live music will be presented by Las Palmas Conjunto to kick off the celebration with food and a children’s parade. Retired Col. Frank Plummer will speak at the event, highlighting the need for service to our country at home and abroad. A special proclamation from the City of McAllen will be presented and read and the Color Guard will be present.
