Carl Perkins

The Carl D. Perkins Vocational-Technical Education Act of 1998 (Perkins) grant is a Federal grant monitored and administered in Texas by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, THECB. Perkins is intended to develop core indicators of performance for postsecondary career and technology education programs and postsecondary workforce education programs. Postsecondary Performance Measures for Perkins Core Indicators are:

  • Student attainment /achievement of challenging State established academic, vocational and technical skill proficiencies.
  • Student attainment/completion of high school diploma, equivalent, or postsecondary degree or credential.
  • Placement, retention, and completion of postsecondary education or advanced training, the military, or employment.
  • Participation in and completion of programs leading to nontraditional employment.

South Texas College (STC) uses Perkins funds for the following activities:

  • Upgrade Curriculum
  • Faculty and Staff Professional Development
  • Guidance and Counseling
  • Instructional Equipment/Capital
  • Special Populations
  • Student Child Care and Textbooks assistance.

STC has been receiving Perkins funds since 1995/1996.
